Rising on the strong shoulders of southern jazz, the Wilmington North Carolina trio Sci Fi is set to release their self-titled debut CD SCI FI. Already a favorite within the American musical community known as ‘the jam band scene’, Sci Fi’s unique musicality encourages appreciation well beyond the hippie hipster. Behind the scenes, Sci Fi can be found rehearsing (another word for jamming) for a festival-filled summer tour. For a freshman band, together just shy of a year, Sci Fi’s pop-culture impact is nothing less than impressive.
The noteworthy strides, made in such short order, in addition to what the band’s inner circle calls “incredible new material and a powerful, evolving synchronicity”, add to an already sharp sense of optimism.
The words and music on the just-completed CD, find their roots in jazz, fusion, funk, reggae and house music. The charismatic trio of improvisational-minded musicians comes alive on stage amidst a richly crafted full-frontal sonic experience. Sci Fi offers a complete collection of original songs experienced by the listener as jazzy improv that swirls within harmony, melody and hypnotic rhythm.
Their live show is always high-energy and always inclusive (there is no staring-at-your-shoes-onstage allowed). Collectively, the boys in the band demonstrate a natural talent both as musicians and as entertainers. A solid sense of brotherhood and camaraderie defines the overarching energy allowing each live experience to resonate with a perfectly improvisational style. Sci Fi has had the honor of sharing the stage with national acts The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Charlie Hunter, and label mates, The Mantras.
