New Killer Stars shows us on this 5-track EP how to rock really hard.
Now this isn't such a big surprise for us because when we reviewed their live performance during EuroSonic we already wrote many great things about their live performance. The threesome also won the Frysian Bandcontest of 2007 and we'll be seeing them again at the Sena Performers POP NL Award Finale in Amsterdam.
In this mix of rock ('n roll) from out the 60's and 70's and grunge/ post-grunge related rock (think of early Foo Fighters) with even some punkrock flavour, the band knows how to combine this in a very original way. The instrumental part of their songs are very good and singer/guitarist Sytse Bloem has a great crunchy voice that matches this kind of music perfectly. The band perfectly accomplished in bringing their live energy into this record. Besides the energy, they did an excellent job with the songwriting because the songs are having a pretty good structure. With pretty sounding riffs and breaks and some surprising twists in some songs is what you actually don't expect.
"Can't Stop Now" is already a small radio hit at radio station KinkFM and this is remarkable because this song isn't even the best song of their EP. Their first song (having the same name as the EP) and "19:24-36" or even catchier then "Can't Stop Now". The fourth song, "Walking Away" is sadly enough a bit poor because this song isn't very exciting comparing to the rest. But even if this song has a weak musical structure, the very large dose of energy makes this song no leftover at all. The final song 'Mister' isn't special in technical aspects either but the drive in this song is what it's all about.
"Hebrew Matthew" will let you hear that New Killer Stars is on the right track and this EP is especially an invitation to check out this three headed band live, because what we have said earlier in the EuroSonic-review "If you are giving yourself with so much passion and even be able to give your audience a natural kick, then you definitely have quality".

New Killer Stars:
There will be no attempts to describe today's featured music as any type of texture, soundscape or ice cream flavor... oh no. What you get, instead, is a heads-up on the solid indie rock three piece of Sytse (guitar, vocals), Cesar (bass, vocals) and Jelle (drums) from Leeuwarden, Friesland, Netherlands. This noisy trio, also known to many as New Killer Stars, has been around for just over a year now and have a great new EP to show for their collective efforts. Hebrew Matthew is the title of the new release and you can hear more of (and get your hands on) it by paying a visit to the New Killer Stars MySpace page.
While there, you will notice a string of regional live performance dates and some amusing info on the band. There is also a New Killer Stars website with a few additional items to check out. We still can't decide whether the band is more interested in walking away from problems or sorrow, but we can tell you one thing... this track is really good and a raucous way to kick off the weekend.

***NOTE by Coma Gun*** Noorderslak/Eurosonic is now in the same league as South by Southwest in Austin or as the Popkomm in Berlin. For three days Groningen is the center of European pop music. Groningen is the capital city of the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. With a population of 185,000, it is by far the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. Eurosonic started with European radio stations united in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) - providing an avenue for European acts to get more national attention.
New Killer Stars - Venue: Shadrak Floor
The energy where New Killer Stars performed on stage this Friday night is almost unreal. This band already caught a small radio hit with their song " Cant stop now" on the national alternative radio station Kink FM. And now they even play on Eurosonic. For 2008 there is a dutch tour planned. You can certainly say that this young band from Friesland is doing well.
And that certainly is what they reflect to you when you see them. Drummer Jelle van Gosliga and bassplayer Cesar Eisma wear bunny rabbit suits on stage, and together with their frontman they go trough the set like a whirlwind. Cesar is a true eye-catcher with his driven looks and his provoking attitude on stage. That's one of the reasons why the two-play between Sytse and Cesar is highly entertaining. Maybe Sytse could work on his singing capabilities, its not always as tight as it should be. However, New killer Stars gave one the best performances of the whole evening. The music stands solid like a house, and if you play with so much energy and passion, and you give your audience such a natural kick, then you truly have quality.

Freesonica is an annual band coaching project for bands from the northern Dutch province Friesland, initiated by Friesland Pop. For each edition, three promising new Frisian bands (New Killer Stars, Greyline, Estate Drama) or acts are selected to be coached and guided on their way to recognition, covering issues such as management, promotion and live-performance. In addition, a promotional CD is released and the bands are doing a tour along local venues, which ends at the renowned Eurosonic-festival in Groningen. The main aim of the Freesonica-project is to provide the bands with the tools and support for them to be able to independently pursue their success.

Friday night is Freesonica-night. Outside, band members hand out CD's and flyers to get the place as crowded as possible. And this seems to work. Next playing are the lunatic idiots of New Killer Stars. In a brief band consideration i caught bass player Cesar saying to his band members "don't think, just play!" And that's the way it's supposed to be with New Killer Stars. This band shows you that they have found themselves on stage. It's wonderful to see that even though they have such a typical nonchalant attitude, they play extremely tight. It looks like it's a piece of cake for them. Lets hope the jury of the SENA Performers POPNL Award thinks the same about this.

Last Saturday the first Dobbefestival of 2008 went loose. There were about 140 visitors in the small youth center and that was quite a big thing. Eventually 180 visitors passed the entrance. The second band of the night is New Killer Stars. With untempted enthusiasm the New Killer Stars treated the audience with very surprising lyrics and harsh sleazy garagerock. The bass player showed once again that musical quality combined with an X-factor knows how to entertain every audience.
